Q: Is It Bad Form to Ask About Compensation in the Interview?
A: Probably

At some point during the interview process the employer will bring up the subject of salary expectations. Let them initiate this conversation. It is better for you (and their impression of you) if you focus on:

  • Communicating your strengths, abilities and experience
  • Displaying your suitability for the job and the culture

Always have a salary range in mind. Do your research on pay for the job title in your industry and city. Remember to value benefits like 401K matching and vacation days; and perks like reduced commute time, remote work availability, and stocked kitchens.

Remember, it is always appropriate to negotiate salary and benefits once you get the offer.
