Are Cover Letters Obsolete? Not Yet

Often cover letters are optional in the application process. Should you include one anyway? The answer is yes. Even though many recruiters and hiring managers may never read your letter, there are still those who find them useful. The cover letter can provide indications and clues to:

  • Your attention to detail
  • Your writing ability
  • Your motivation and personality

A great cover letter will also align your specific skills and accomplishments to the job requirements, and briefly explain why you are the ideal candidate for the job. Don’t risk giving the impression that you can’t be bothered to write a cover letter. If your resume alone places you in the “maybe” stack, a great cover letter could secure the interview.
